Breast cancer has gone unnoticed as many Indian women and their families rarely understand the importance of this issue and fail to undergo regular check-ups. I founded The Women’s Cancer Initiative in 2003 in partnership with the Tata Memorial Hospital. The foundation takes care of various issues related to cancer in women such as breast, cervical and ovarian cancers, with initial focus on breast cancer. The foundation is driven by its desire to try and make a difference in every woman’s life. The foundation has undertaken numerous initiatives to create awareness and emphasise on the importance of early detection. It aids R&D on the causes and cures of the disease, facilitates interaction between professionals and conducts awareness drives.
Its core activities comprise of financial support to socially and economically disadvantaged women, who are diagnosed with breast and gynecological cancers. The Initiative has supported hundreds of women to complete their treatment with chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, surgery and rehabilitation.
The Women’s Cancer Initiative have partnered with the Tata Memorial Hospital in the Mobile Outreach Program, in the form of a donation of the Mobile Screening Van, which was inaugurated by Ghulam Nabi Azad, honorable minister of health and family welfare on 1st November,2009. This mobile will provide health education, screening and other preventive services to thousands of women from the lower socio economic areas in and around Mumbai, free of cost. The initiative also organizes an Annual Breast and Gynecological Cancer Conference in October each year, at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, which is the leading conference on this subject in India and is attended by over 250 National and International Oncologists from the field of Women’s Cancers.
